growing up jamaican

i came upon wayne's childhood album (the cover pictured above) over the weekend and couldn't resist posting some of his pictures. having been born in jamaica, he spent the first 5 years of his life immersed in a rich culture. the images of parents, grandparents, and a caribbean santa(!) are irresistible.

earth hour

on march 29, 2008 @ 8pm, cities around the world will turn off their lights for earth hour, a WWF event to raise awareness about climate change. earth hour has grown from a small australian event in 2007 to a global phenomenon that will occur across six continents and in as many as 20 cities in 2008. this year, toronto was chosen as the flagship canadian city to commemorate earth hour- so get ready to pull out the candles and turn off the lights!

marimekko

marimekko, the iconic finnish textile and design company is lending its signature vivid patterns from the 50s, 60s, and 70s to h&m, the swedish fashion retail giant. available in april, the retailer's racks will be filled with tunics, dresses, shorts, shirts and various accessories emblazoned with the pop art patterns. it could be a raging hit, or a tragic miss - yet either way i can't wait to check it out!

i found this picture at my parents' house yesterday. it was taken at a party they were attending in the early 70s. i love the severity of my dad's pose and the formality of it all.

retro hose

my friend natalie stopped by yesterday with a box full of her mother's shoes and some other vintage goodies. these packages of can can hose from the 70s are precious. especially love the cheeky art and tag line the kink-free panty hose with kicky stretch. who can argue with that?

glancing over olivia's film from barbados, there seemed to be a pervasive theme running throughout-herself. in this hyper-digital age, it seems that olivia has become hyper aware of the modern looking glass.

in honour of sandra's portuguese heritage i couldn't resist writing a post about buraka som sistema. i found their song sound of kudoro on one of my favourite music blogs stereogum and was immediately hooked. be prepared for the crazy dance moves and pumping sound!
